Building resilient and effective infrastructure across the UK is essential to transition towards more sustainable and circular systems for managing plastics. This includes not only the ability to collect, sort, and reprocess plastics for recycling, but also the systems required to enable reuse models such as cleaning facilities, reverse logistics, and return points.
To plan and implement such systems effectively, reliable data is essential including insights into the quantities and types of materials being collected, the composition of the material streams, and the infrastructure capacity, both current and future, needed to support recycling and reuse systems at scale. Reliable data can support the design of systems that are fit for purpose, flexible, and capable of building a plastics circular economy.
Specialist requirements, such as securing recycled materials for sensitive applications like food-contact packaging, will require dedicated collection and processing streams. Similarly, new delivery systems for refillable or modular products may need bespoke infrastructure and consumer engagement strategies to operate effectively.
Emerging technologies, including chemical recycling and digital tracking tools, are also important considerations to innovate and help address long-standing challenges to recycle ‘hard to recycle’ plastics and provide audit trails and transparency.
· Primary data and analysis on the sorting and reprocessing capacities for different polymers and formats of plastic in the UK. This helps to identify gaps that require future interventions, innovations and investment that need to be put in place.
· Report detailing the current and future capacity for UK plastic, including the sorting and reprocessing of material.
· Ongoing research into new technologies and how they fit into the current and future plastics infrastructure.
· Identification of trends relating to plastic management e.g. plastic waste export and the impact on UK recycling.
· Data driven overviews of plastic packaging and products in the market and in the waste stream and how effectively they can be captured, reused or recycled.
· Solutions relating to current and future plastics recycling infrastructure and capacity, its ability to handle plastics from different sources (e.g. household or commercial) and in various formats and polymers, and other bespoke applications (e.g. food contact).
· Help stakeholders understand how different elements—policy, design, logistics, consumer behaviour, and infrastructure—interact within the wider circular economy, supporting the development of effective, joined-up solutions.
